How Solar Pool Heating Works

Solar pool heating is a straightforward, reliable, and eco-friendly solution for keeping your pool warm. By leveraging the sun’s free energy, these systems provide consistent heating with minimal operational costs and maintenance. Whether you’re looking to save on energy bills, extend your swimming season, or reduce your environmental impact, solar pool heating offers a smart, sustainable choice for pool owners.

How it Works

  1.  Pool water is drawn from the pool by the pump and passed through the filter to remove debris.
  2. The filtered water is then directed through the solar collectors. As it passes through the collectors, the sun's energy heats the water. The solar collectors are designed to maximize heat absorption, using materials that efficiently transfer the sun’s energy to the water.
  3. The heated water is returned to the pool, raising the overall water temperature. This cycle continues until the pool reaches the desired temperature.

Solar Pool Heating panels

Materials

Construction

Construction

Solar pool heating panels are innovative devices designed to harness the sun's energy to heat your swimming pool efficiently and sustainably. These panels, typically mounted on your roof or a ground-mounted rack, capture and convert solar radiation into heat, which is then transferred to your pool water, keeping it warm and inviting throughout the year.

Construction

The panels are basically two large header/footer pipes separated/connected by 100's of smaller 'soda straw' tubes.  They are made of black plastic and get pretty hot in the sun.  FUN FACT: When water runs through them they are not hot!  All the heat is taken away.  They are quite cool to the touch

Solar pool heating panels are all 4' wide but they come in different lengths.  The designers job is to try to fit enough of these rectangular panels on your roof.

how many solar panels do you need?

Designing and sizing a Solar Pool Heating system

Sizing a solar pool heating system correctly is essential to ensure it heats your pool efficiently and effectively. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you determine the appropriate size for your solar pool heating system:

1. Determine Pool Surface Area

Calculate the surface area of your pool. For rectangular pools, use the formula: Surface Area=Length×Width\text{Surface Area} = \text{Length} \times \text{Width}Surface Area=Length×WidthFor circular pools, use the formula: Surface Area=π×(Diameter2)2\text{Surface Area} = \pi \times \left(\frac{\text{Diameter}}{2}\right)^2Surface Area=π×(2Diameter)2

2. Consider Your Climate

The climate in your region significantly affects the size of the solar heating system you need. In cooler or less sunny areas, you’ll require more panel area to achieve the same heating effect as in sunnier regions.

3. Determine Desired Temperature Rise

Decide how much you want to increase your pool's temperature. A common desired temperature rise is between 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (3 to 6 degrees Celsius).

4. Calculate Panel Area Needed

The rule of thumb is that the total surface area of your solar panels should be equal to 50-100% of your pool's surface area. The exact percentage depends on factors like your local climate, the desired temperature rise, and the amount of sunlight your panels will receive. Here’s a basic guide:

  • Warm Climates: 50-70% of pool surface area.
  • Moderate Climates: 70-100% of pool surface area.
  • Cool Climates: 100% or more of pool surface area.

5. Adjust for Efficiency and Placement

Panels are typically placed on a roof or a ground-mounted rack where they receive the most sunlight. Panels oriented towards the south and tilted at an angle equal to your latitude will maximize efficiency. Adjust the size based on any shading or suboptimal orientation.

Example Calculation

Let’s walk through an example for a rectangular pool in a moderate climate:

  1. Calculate Pool Surface Area:
    • Pool dimensions: 30 feet (length) x 20feet (width)
    • Surface Area = 30 x 20 = 600 square feet

  1. Determine Panel Area Needed:
    • Desired percentage (moderate climate): 75-100%
    • Panel Area Needed = 600 x 0.75 to 450 x 1.00
    • Panel Area Needed = 450 to 600 square feet

  1. Adjust for Efficiency and Placement:
    • Assume optimal placement with minimal shading
    • Final Panel Area Needed = 450 to 500 square feet

Additional Considerations

  • System Layout: Most pool pumps can handle the added flow rate of the solar system. You may need a separate booster pump.
  • Cover Usage: Using a pool cover when the pool is not in use can significantly reduce heat loss and improve the efficiency of your solar heating system.

What are the major components of a solar pool heating system

Controller

3-port valve

3-port valve

Modern solar pool heating systems often include an automatic control system that monitors the pool’s temperature and the solar collectors' temperature. The system uses this information to adjust the flow control valve, ensuring optimal heating. If the pool water is already at the desired temperature or if it’s too cold outside for effective heating, the system will bypass the solar collectors to prevent unnecessary cooling.

Actuator

The Controller directs this actuator.

The actuator turns the 3 way valve to direct water from the filter to the solar system or bypass the solar and flow back into pool

Sensor

Sensors tell the Controller(the “brain”) the outside temperature and the water temperature coming out of the pool.
